  1. Such a remarkable article! And for one of my favorite houses, no less! I loved it!

Question: In the past some sourcebooks (ECG from 4e, i think?) have declared that house Orien accepts those eladrin that want to join them because of their natural teleportation skills, which is something they have in common. Is it something you would keep in kanon, or do you have a personal approach to it?

PS. There is a small mistake in Final Thoughts, you called them Lyrandar instead of Orien

    • I think the mistake is in Friends and Foes (“if their services threaten Lyrandar’s obsolete traditions.”)

  2. I can see where so much of this will be interesting for one of the PCs at my table who has chosen to play an Andaurian Wandsman with the Mark of Passage.

  3. Great article can’t wait to read about the others, especially House Medani. Such an iconic house for Eberron’s noir time yet so much to.find out about them. I definitely want to.weave more Orien into my campaigns now.

  4. Great article as always, and on my favorite House too! I just love how Orien is one of the “nice” Houses, but they’re down on their luck and so desperate to regain their former glory they’re willing to take incredible risks. I think it makes for great stories.

IME, Passage (or at least Journey’s Home) is built on a manifest zone to Kythri, which reinforces the theme of wanderlust by literally making its inhabitants restless if they live there for too long, forcing House agents to travel.

I notice you don’t mention Ghallanda as a friend of the House. I would have imagined the two to be close, is that not particularly the case? Same with Vadalis, which I assume provides horses, tribex and the like for the caravans.

That was an oversight; I’ve added it in.

  5. This article is stunning, and filled with such a plethora of useful information on how to play Orien characters but also how to incorporate the House into the wider world.

I love little details like passengers being lost with Wild Teleport. Having named Orien heirs from the past of the House but also who are still alive and active gives so many hooks for players and gamerunners.

Thank you, Keith. This is absolutely fantastic and filled with possibility. And of course I have a personal investment in the history of the Thorn family.

  6. About the teleportation Circles, how would House Orien view a PC that doesn’t have the mark but has the spell, would they charge for the use of the circle, forbid the use? What would you do in your Eberron?

    • In my campaign, Orien wouldn’t allow random strangers to make use of their circles. They wouldn’t share the circle codes, and if adventurers somehow acquired them it would be a big problem every time they appeared in an enclave. Which means either that adventurers will have to use other circles, OR — more likely — that they have to come to an understanding to use the circles. If one of the adventurers is an Orien heir, that’s the answer there. Otherwise, the party would need to acquire an Orien patron or make some other arrangement. A simple answer is that the Passage Ring is willing to use them to conduct experiments; they can use the circles as long as they agree to carry divination amulets that allow Orien to track details of their teleportation.
