  1. Question! If, in a version of Eberron, Erandis were to become the Queen of the Dead, what would you think would happen then to the Mark of Death? Would the Queen of the Dead bear the Apex Mark of Death, for example, and could this cause the Mark of Death to re-emerge in a species.

    • If, in a version of Eberron, Erandis were to become the Queen of the Dead, what would you think would happen then to the Mark of Death?

The whole idea of Erandis becoming Queen of the Dead is that it’s only possible BECAUSE she has the Apex Mark of Death. The Apex Mark of Death was predicted to be able to give someone near-divine power, to shift the balance of the planes… which is to say, the potential to become a planar power. A logical follow-up question is whether the Apex Mark of Making could someone a power of Fernia, if the Apex Mark of Handling could transform its bearer into a totem of Lamannia, and so on. So it’s not that the Queen of the Dead would have the Apex Mark of Death; it’s that she’d be QUEEN OF THE DEAD, an incarnate idea.

      • So, less she bears the mark, and more she becomes what she does because of the Apex mark fore filling its potential. Interesting, I hadn’t considered that way of looking at it. Thank you!

I suppose another question would then be, in the case of the Mark of Death, what then becomes of the mark when someone with the Apex mark becomes a planar power. Does it re-emerge, or continue to cease to be.

  2. Huh, we finally see the fabeled Mark of Death. Nice, I like the stats for it.

Perhaps the stats for a Mournland Bomb next?/j

  3. Thank you, Keith. If history had unfolded differently we could have had Speaking Stones right next to the Ghost Phones.

  4. Hello Mr. Keith, following the interpretation left here by you, what would a Siberys version of the Death Mark be like?

    • I can’t say off the top of my head, because I haven’t designed any Siberys dragonmarks for 2024 and I’d have to develop that system overall before I could apply it to the Mark of Death. It’s also the case that there’s not a lot of high level necromancy spells that feel especially applicable; in my opinion the Mark of Death is more about animating and interacting with the dead than it is about slaying the living, and Resurrection is the province of the Mark of Healing. Create Undead, Danse Macabre, and Negative Energy Flood are all possible spells that could be associated with a Siberys Mark, but those are lower level than traditional Siberys Mark spells, so I’d want to add another effect.

  5. How significant is the possibility of the Mark of Death being in competition with other potential dragonmarks, such as a hypothetical “Mark of Frost” or “Mark of Leaves,” to emerge as the thirteenth dragonmark? If the aforementioned “Mark of Frost” or “Mark of Leaves” or whatnot were to manifest, would that stymy the odds of the Mark of Death resurfacing?

    • In MY campaign, there can’t be more than 13 “true” marks, so yes, if a new mark appeared it would replace the Mark of Death. And that’s a thing that could happen. The Mark of Leaves (or “Growth”) is certainly a viable idea; we’ve noted before that there’s no mark associated with Flora or agriculture (aside from the weather control aspects of Storm).

As for how significant the possibility is, there’s no way to calculate those odds; it’s entirely dependent on the story you want to tell. But I think the idea of a new mark replacing the Mark of Death is a valid story idea.
